Snow plow for a Ram 2500 or 3500: the checks that matter

Reviewed October 16, 2026 · Rhode Island Plow & Equipment, Johnston, RI

Ram heavy-duty pickups are widely plowed, but the numbers that decide whether a given truck can carry a given plow come from Ram's body-builder publications for the exact model year. This guide covers the checks that apply and tells you where the figures are, without pretending to replace them.

What we can say from published summaries

Trade-press summaries of Ram's 2018 body-builder charts say the empty truck, with permanently attached plow parts, must not carry more than a set share of its total weight on the front axle to stay within the brake-certification rules, and that securely attached ballast at the rear is the remedy when it does. The same summaries say maximum plow weights are listed by model, that heavy-duty plows limit the cab to two occupants, and that the plow prep packages are not available together with the Sport package.

What we have not been able to confirm

Ram's own current body-builder guide holds the model-by-model front axle ratings and plow limits. We could not retrieve it, so this page does not quote figures from it. Ask a Ram dealer whether your truck was built with a plow prep group and what its front axle rating is, or read the body-builder guide for your model year.

Checks to make before you buy

  • Read the front and rear axle ratings and the gross rating from the label in the driver's door opening.
  • Find out whether the truck has the plow prep group and whether options such as a sport package change that.
  • Get the plow's weight from the manufacturer and compare it with the front axle's capacity, remembering that fuel, tools and passengers count.
  • Plan for ballast: where it will be carried and how it will be secured.
  • Count occupants honestly — the guidance limits them for heavy-duty plows.

How we confirm it for your truck

Use Find My Plow with your VIN or truck details. We compare the decoded build with the manufacturer evidence we hold; where Ram's figures have not been verified, a technician confirms the fit with you before you order. A written installed price follows, itemized by plow, mount, wiring and labor.

Sources we read

This is general guidance. Your vehicle owner's manual and the equipment manufacturer's documentation always take priority, and fitment for your exact truck is confirmed before any work.
